  1. Quarterdeck WebCompass (TM) v2.0

  3. Thank you for using our WebCompass 2.0.  Please read
  4. through this short README file so you can find out the latest
  5. information about the WebCompass 2.0.  If you don't want to read
  6. the complete README, at the very least please refer to the KNOWN
  7. OUTSTANDING ISSUES section below before using WebCompass.

  9. INTRODUCTION
  10.  
  11. Quarterdeck WebCompass 2.0 is, in part, an intelligent search tool that
  12. allows you to find exactly what you are looking for on the Internet.
  13. Working in conjunction with popular search engines such as AltaVista,
  14. Yahoo, WebCrawler, Excite and Lycos, as well as many others, WebCompass
  15. 2.0  makes it easy to sort through the millions of pages of text
  16. currently existing on the Web.  However, WebCompass 2.0 is NOT JUST a
  17. search tool.  It's a complete research assistant,  summarizing and
  18. categorizing your information based on your own personal preferences,
  19. and making it permanently available in a robust database.  
  20.  
  21. There are a growing number of "search tools" being made available, but
  22. most are simply front-ends to search engines, allowing you to type in a
  23. search query that will go to all the supported engines at once.
  24. WebCompass 2.0, however, is the first program of its kind that makes its
  25. own summaries of the downloaded pages, and allows you to categorize your
  26. search results exactly the way you  want to organize the information.
  27. Also, while most search tools have built-in support for specific search
  28. engines, WebCompass 2.0 allows you to configure any search engine.
  29. We've already added support for about 20 search engines, but if you find
  30. another you like, simply add it to the list!

  36. INSTALLATION AND COMPATIBILITY NOTES
  37.  
  38. The following browsers are currently supported: -  Netscape Navigator
  39. v3.0 -  Microsoft Internet Explorer v3.0 (for Windows 95 and NT 4.0) and
  40. v1.5 (for Windows NT 3.51)

  43. KNOWN OUTSTANDING ISSUES
  44.  
  45. 1.  If you are on a network within a firewall and are unable to add new
  46. search resources due to an error message stating that
  47. "http://localhost.<your domain name>:<a port number>" is not accessible,
  48. follow the steps listed below:
  49.  
  50. Microsoft Internet Explorer: Go to the Connection tab in Internet
  51. Explorer's Properties/Options. Click on Settings and add the word
  52. "localhost" (without the quotation marks) to "Exceptions" area. Restart
  53. the browser.
  54.  
  55. Netscape Navigator: Go to the Proxies tab in Navigator's Network
  56. Preferences. Click on View and add the word "localhost" (without the
  57. quotation marks) to the "No Proxy For" area. Restart the browser.
  58.  
  59. 2.  The Agent queries for the Topic Name even if the name is not
  60. included in the list of query terms.
  61.  
  62. 3.  The WebCompass doesn't save the location or sizes
  63. of toolbars between sessions.
  64.  
  65. 4.  If the Agent status bar is indicating search and summarization times 
  66. that are out of sync with your desktop clock, modify the TZ environment
  67. variable to match the time zone settings of the desktop clock or 
  68. eliminate the TZ time variable.
  69.  
  70. 5.  The WebCompass 2.0 database contains a more comprehensive and 
  71. up-to-date list of search resources than what was shipped with the beta 
  72. releases. However, if you choose to install WebCompass 2.0 over an 
  73. already installed beta and choose not to replace the WebCompass 
  74. database, you will not get the new search resources. If, on the other 
  75. hand, you create a new database with the WebCompass 2.0, the latest list
  76. of search resources will be contained in the new database. At this 
  77. time, no method exists for incorporating new search resources or 
  78. databases other than those created using WebCompass 1.0x  into the 
  79. existing databases. Future versions of WebCompass will allow users to 
  80. merge or import existing databases into new ones.
